We brought back the rain
We brought back the rain in our raincoats an impermanent, damp souvenir and as each droplet dried the reality died leaving only a dream for next year We brought back the salt of exertion in the wandering trails on our backs and it mingled with dust in a crystallized crust on the clothing screwed up in our packs We brought back the earth in our pockets we brought back the mud on our shoes we brought back the miles in our aches and our smiles and in every scratch, blister and bruise We brought back the sun on our faces and the cold mountain air on our skin we brought back the stones in our muscles and bones and my heart has one somewhere within For we couldn't bring back all the glittering stars in the sky and the valleys that night when each one of us carried a star on our brow and pursued its gold pathway of light.
