HIS ONLY CRIME

His only crime…
*
His only crime
Skipping school sometimes
His single mother left for work at five
So he would watch as the bus went by
*
He couldn't stand another day
Of the taunting and teasing
And them calling him gay
*
Just cause he was different
Then all the others
He kept to himself
In to art and music
*
He didn't like football
Or any other sports
He wasn't a gangsta
Into running whores
*
They sent him to a school
Many miles away
Away from his family
Not see them for days
*
There were bars on the windows
And mandatory church
Kept him doped up on drugs
So he wouldn't get hurt
*
He went along in a stolen car
A car that was stolen
By some other boy
*
He only wanted to get back home
Back to his brother, grandfather
and mom
But he went to the Juvie home
a ward of the state.
He wanted to do right
But now it's too late
*
I went to visit him
Whilehe wasthere
But I couldn't hug him
I just told him I cared
*
From there he was transferred
To a halfway house
Where the Christians in charge
Keep you quiet as a mouse
*
He couldn't have books
Until they were approved
If they weren't religious
They wouldn't be too
*
He couldn't read books
Or do his art.
Just slept all the time
In his 4 X 6 room
*
I think the punishment
Should fit the crime
They should save
Incarceration for another time
*
I think they should give him
another chance
Are you allowed just one
When you are just fourteen?
*
A victim of a system
That just does not work
What he needs is understanding
And love to make good.
Not separated from all
the people he loves
makes you wonder
if there is a God up above?

I enjoy writing and since rediscovering the power of poetry, it has brought me much joy! My favorite poet is Richard Brautigan, and I am a big fan of freestyle poetry, as I find it less limiting and most creative. I also like spoken word poetry....
