Dance of the Scarecrow
Dance of the Scarecrow She is in a field with a scarecrow at night All Hallows Eve, in the eerie moonlight The scarecrow’s jacket flaps in the breeze Which whistles through the willow trees She can hear the tolling of a distant bell Murmuring voices chant a mystical spell Fear cuts sharply through her like a knife The ragged scarecrow, it has come to life! No lights are in the cottage of the farm As the scarecrow grabs her slender arm His bony hand feels like a vulture’s claw A whisper comes from his head of straw ‘You shall be the victim of circumstance Tonight I’ll perform the scarecrow dance But I require a partner to dance with ne It’s the only way scarecrows can be free’ She tries to break away but he is strong ‘He says ‘For you to try to flee is wrong You realise, from the look on your face Who dances with me will take my place’ The notes from a harp floated in the air He bowed low ‘If you please, lady fair May I have this dance, as you are free When it’s over you take the place of me With that, he strengthened his tight grip Around the field of corn the pair did trip He laughed loud as he trod upon her toes He saw the flock, a hundred black crows Towards the scarecrow the birds did dart Swooped down and tore him clean apart She saw him perish with a great delight The crows then flew away into the night Thus ended her night of horror and shock Why was she saved by a feathered flock? As her mind went to the past, she smiled The injured crow she tended when a child
