Damaged (Alleys at Dawn)

It wasn't for me to decide my own fate; I was a child lost in your big-people world, and
now I suffer for it.
And the little girl inside can't understand why - she looks through the jaded eyes of a stranger - dragged along helplessly in the real world.
Cry, little girl, because no one
hears
Laugh, little girl, but it won't last
long
This is all the damned world has
to offer you;
A damaged life danced to an
infinately sadder song
We are all beggers on the street cornere one way or another. We all hold out our hats as strangers pass and weep in the alleys at dawn.
She always thought the smiles were real - she has yet to learn not to trust what she feels - because one way or another it will turn a corner and she'll see the sun rising between damaged buildings.
Cry, little girl, because no one
hears
Laugh, little girl, but it won't last
long
This is all the damned world has
to offer you;
Cuts on your knees when you wake in
the alleys at dawn
Why is she holding on to me? Waiting behind my eyes, tapping on my heart...and when I cry, I am the one behind her eyes...
Sunrays seperate clouds a bluebird hits the ground
Shadows move to rhythms of a real world song that
grow as sad as they are long.
She somehow seems smaller between the damaged buildings
They showed her what her dreams really were but she wasn't willing - it didn't matter, not to them.
She watches, confused, as they pass her alley holding out their hats.
Just another stray among the alleycats.
Keep on singing, little girl, at the top
of your lungs
It's a begger's ball - they're begging you to
dance with them
Keep weeping, little girl, from behind my
damaged eyes...
I hope one day I'll listen...
