And Then There Was One

these memories are so painful as they turn
layer by layer revealed in freeze dried fears
lingering glimpses of former trials and burns.
step across the sidewalk of my mind
and meet me again at our late night haunts
where we spoke of dreams crushed against the sudden shock
and how we'd work to overcome
in spite of, a hundred flaming arrows heading our way
do you remember me there?
or was it all a dream
did we ever belong
you needed me then,
a thousand calls, a million tears we shed
and now, I walk this lonely road
it's quiet here
inside this calm,
I'm drowning pressed against these waves
as the taste of yesterday slowly fades,
I need you now, but you've gone away
swept along the midst of your unbearable pain
into some other place
I'll never be
and all I have
are these thoughts that yearn,
as memories turn
lessons learned, but never taught
