Tatiana's Letter to Onegin (Translation)
This excerpt comes from chapter 3 of Alexander Pushkin’s famous novel in verse - Eugene Onegin. I’ve translated it from the native Russian and worked to maintain the original’s rhyme and meter. Though the letter is taken out of a larger context, I’m certain that it can stand as a poem on its own (if not my translation then at least the original). Regards -Gene Tatiana’s Letter to Onegin I write to you – what’s left this hour? when words no longer seem germane. I realize it’s in your power To punish me with your disdain. Beneath my woeful lot I cower but if you heed compassion’s plea perhaps you’ll not abandon me. At first I vowed to keep unspoken My secret guilt I wouldn’t show And of its force you’d never know If only hope remained unbroken That rarely, even once a week I’d have a chance to hear you speak, Into our home extend a greeting and murmur but a single phrase Then spend the coming nights and days In thought of only our next meeting. They say that people you deplore And find the rural life vexatious So we have nothing you’d adore Merely this invite – bare and gracious. To our forgotten backwoods farm Why did you make your visitation? I’d know of neither you nor harm of my indignant deprivation. This callow spirit’s tribulation Who knows? In time may still depart Then I could be a loving mother A faithful partner to another Somebody pleasant to my heart. The love of someone else, no never! For me there’s but a single course From all the rest I hereby sever By heavens will; my heart is yours! Until our paths had intersected My life was but an empty breath I know by God you’ve been selected You are my guardian till death. With thoughts of you my dreams abounded Though still unknown I held you dear Your haunting gaze was always near And through my soul your voice resounded But no! a dream it couldn’t be Within a glance you had been chosen I lit aflame and stood there frozen Then let a whisper – it is he! Did I not hear your voice pervading The idle silence of the air When the impoverished I was aiding Or with my prayers attempted fading My soul’s hysterical despair? Inside a moment’s brief collision Was it not you, oh dearest vision Who in the twilight darted past Then by my bedside softly kneeling Your love and joyfulness revealing Whispered the words of hope at last? Are you my angel, here to save me Or to seduce me and enslave me? Please bring my doubts beneath control Perhaps tis nonsense I’ve created Delusions of a callow soul And something wholly else is fated… So let it be! Into your hands I lay my fate without objection In front of you this tear drop lands And there I beg for your protection… Imagine: I am here alone Nobody understands my aching I feel my reason slowly breaking Then I shall die without a moan. With this one glace, for you I’m waiting To set my inner hopes agleam Or lay to rest this bitter dream With but a well-deserved berating. Here must I end! With shame and fear I tremble at what I have written Yet it’s your honor I hold dear And boldly trust I won’t be smitten.

My muse can be unseemly and nomadic although she fancies meter and good rhyme, her diligence and output are sporadic, and some may say she’s moving past her prime. At times she’s off consorting with the sages reflecting on existence, as it were, At...
