Mystical Incantations

there was something in the corner of his smile
that gave me a semblance of hope for our future
I tried not to force my way inside his world
stayed casually back three steps, maybe four

she told me I'd changed during these last ten years
and yet, somehow I still felt the same
thinking to myself, it was her, not me
I was the same caring soul

his words, they were perfect
and I want to believe
is it possible the meanings are the same
after all this time

dare I now, take this tremendous first step
that's really a second or third step
overlapping the first step
that never left ground

his passion is real
and yet, so is his sass
coming at me, ten ways from Sunday
can this be 

there was a mantra in the sound of his voice
unmistakable.
