Candy

Dawn
She watched him
amble towards her,
her eyes curious.
One finger unconsciously
scratched at her scalp
who is the man?
His eyes captured hers
as he drew within
eye-catching distance.
His lips curled,
half-smile, half sneer
it's not daddy
She tried to smile back
but her tongue
got between pale lips.
Her brow furrowed
in perplexity
he's got candy
He didn't speak,
just proffered.
A temptation too great,
she reached.
Small hand met large
he won't let go
"Don't talk to strangers,"
she remembered.
She was silent.
He grinned openly,
grasped her hand tightly
it works every time
Parents wept inconsolably
for their unimaginable loss
Through the tears
they wailed,
"We told her, we told her!"
