This is the first in a series of four (which I am choosing to call a Quadrilogy) which were written for the company for which I worked for 29 years and I have reworked. I will post one each week until Halloween. Plus I have one other, not related to these.
Davina (a Halloween rhyme)
The sky was black, though the moon was full andbats were flying low,
a wolf was howling in the distant night as the living dead prepared to go.
Davina cackled as she grabbed her broom; the witch needed something more
and knew she would find just what it was at the nearby corner store.
The ghosts and goblins all stepped asideto let the wicked Davina pass,
she crept by the long, black hearse and the ghoul who was pumping gas.
Not one of these creatures would so much as meet her eyes with theirs,
yet, clerks and customers inside the store, couldn't seem to break their stares.
She saw the sign on the corner store door, "Please remove your mask",
her green tinted face contorted with rage; no one would DARE to ask!
A ravenscreeched, from the canopy, high; from the ground rose swirling smoke,
her eyes glinted red,her yellow teeth gnashed, making clear this was no joke.
The demons on the lot grew colder still, as a wind blew through their bones,
from within the lighted store itself, came the muffled sound of moans.
The fiends outside knew this witch well and knew her magic was black
and once cast, her evil spells were never to be taken back.
"I want nachos and chili dogs and chewing gum, too
and if you don't bring it out, I am coming inside to you.
Know it now, this is NOT a mask; this is the face I’ve got,
if you know what is good for you, you'll get someone on this lot!"
Customers pulled their children close, the cashiers both were quaking,
even the monsters outside the door, had shivers of Davina's making.
Someone whispered, "Lock the door", the lights went into flickers,
but the Assistant Manager said, "Make her food, we'll even add a Snickers."
Once chili was spooned and cheese was pumped andgum was sitting near,
the question remained...who'd take it out? Who could abandon their fear?
A young cashier, new to the job, stepped forward and swallowed hard,
"I'll take it out and give it to her, but I'm asking her for her card!"
He put her items into a bag after quickly ringing them up,
he hoped she liked pop in a bottle or can, and not in a fountain cup.
Outside the door, a black cat yowled and an owl began to hoot.
The cashier jammed his hat on his head and shouldered up her loot.
He opened the door, just the tiniest crack; the scent of ozone was thick...
"Good evening, Ma'am, I have your stuff, but need your credit card, quick!"
Davina’s eyes flashed lightening bolts, her lips curled in a sneer,
"I could turn you into nothing more than the reflection in your mirror!"
"But at no time, did I EVER say that I expected this for free!
So, here's my card, go run it, now and bring it back to me.
I know that I am ugly, ugly as ‘homemade sin',
but mark my words, on Halloween, next...I WILL BE COMING IN!!"
