Liverpool And The Slave Trade

Stick a pin in a map of Liverpool
There is a high chance you will skewer a name linked to slavery
Why take slaves
They were human
They were like me
They were like you
What wrong did they do
They were black
Unlike me and unlike you
1788 Thomas Clarkson attacked the slave trade
An abolitionist through and through
At least 25 of the periods' Lord Mayors
Were slave owners or traders
So what impact could the abolitionist do
The evil triangular trade
Between Britain, Africa, and the Caribbean too
A ships human cargo
Changed together like animals in a zoo
Penny Lane that the Beatles made famous
Has a darker history too
It was named after James Penny
Who was a slave trader too
I love my Liverpool
I love its history too
But I accept it has a darker side
Involved in the slave trade
So do other cities too
