procedure

i can't ask what its meaning is
before i simply ask what it is
though i am so impatient and so
i say it is life or the universe

i mean is that not what is said?
hasn't it been so well rehearsed?
when i close my eyes i can hear it
when i open them i know it is false

she made me aware as she locked
her immortal eyes onto my own
and so i asked what it really is
for the first time and i wondered

when i looked then i knew for sure
i had no idea what i was looking at
and so asking what its meaning is
became something to me absurd

i saw before me the best life offers
having no end to wives and children
i stood watching through the ages
every attachment burned like straw

i walked billions of mine to school
filling the shoes of countless parents
who stared into uncertain futures
i saw calamity overtaking them all

it is a cruel thing to have beauty
not creating it come from the heart
seeing perfection reflected in faces
while standing there with open palms

i do not understand what it is to be
alive and to have what drives me
to be captivated into seeing meaning
while i have no idea of the premise

i saw her first in a dream of mine
but when i found her on the street
'twas uncanny that she looked at me
beauty as a destroyer unknowingly

and so now i scoff at the notion
of meaning itself i have no idea
subjected like matter to splendor
flung to perish alongside with her
