A Gift Given

A Gift Given (villanelle) At the cross that stood on a hill far away; With the torture and pain suffered there, Nothing is left, but the gift given that day, Of a life who had taught men to pray. The people who gathered could only stare, At the cross that stood on a hill far away. He was nailed to a cross as his friend did betray. His antagonists did angrily flare! Nothing is left but the gift given that day. So many had followed his kind gentle way His love, and his words of good care, At the cross that stood on a hill far away. His Mother was weeping. Friends cried, knelt or lay On the ground at his feet that were bare. Nothing is left but his gift given that day. He was sent by the Father to teach and stay Til the time came to give all his care At the cross that stood on a hill far away Nothing is left but his gift given that day.
