alone (a Halloween rhyme)
alone (a Halloween rhyme) the little store was brightly lit, the moon was shining full, something about that field out back, a strange, mysterious pull. early in the evening, business was… well, hectic is the word, by midnight though, the lot was clear of all but a large black bird, whose shadow was tremendous, his cry was eerily shrill, the graveyard guy, all alone, was staggered by a chill. suddenly the wind came up, dead leaves were all a-swirl, the door blew open, in they marched, vampires, goblins, one young girl. rumor is, not so young at all; dressed in black, with a pointed hat and that bird flew at her call. the first to speak was the ‘girl’ herself, “today’s Halloween you know, we’re having a party and you’re invited we’ll be putting on quite a show!” out on the lot there began a parade; several black hearses, in single file. each one driven by a uniformed fiend, and each of them with a ghoulish smile! drivers got out to pump their gas and wash their windshields, too. as they entered the store, the cashier thought, “what in the hell do I do?” now, remember, this is hearsay, we don’t even know if it’s true, though if you’re working alone on Halloween night, all we can say is… BOO! 09-03-10 ©tlp 2010
