An Evening Prayer

Oh that I spoke your limitless language Only to offer you unhindered praise With words formed beyond the human spectrum That could express the glory of your ways… Your marriage vow, ordained upon a tree That bought your bride with sacrificial shame, Has struck my heart with perspicacity And shown my eyes the power of your name, That makes the waters still and lions tame, And conquers death that I be made alive To tell of the salvation you provide Now east of Easter I will do your will For grace has set my soul to be redeemed, It answers for the void I could not fill, And stands against the demons who have schemed To render helpless those who you’ve esteemed, By faith and blood and power over sin To guide my paths with footsteps not of skin For Hell would love to prophecy my pain And fashion out an esoteric creed, That has me work for righteousness in vain Or let me think a Christian should not bleed, Deceiving the elect through selfish greed, Through a dagger's blade pressed against my throat, Through a drifter's plea, asking for my coat So arm your sons as soldiers gone to war Against the alters of deceptive prayer Let daughters sing the praises you adore With overflowed affection brought to bear The love within your Gospel we declare As vapors given form to testify The message of the cross: 'Tetelesti' For worship drives this sinner’s heart to speak Of miracles, witnessed through your story With words formed beyond the human spectrum Praise be to you, King of endless glory!
