Before and after

My first attempt at a villanelle I lived my life without regrets Not really happy, nor real sad But that was me before we met I’ve never been the one to fret With one step forward, two steps back I lived my life without regrets From romance novels that I’ve read I had ideas what true love meant But that was me before we met You swept me off my feet – to bed That night with you made me forget The life I lived without regrets A fool, I knew what to expect That you were drunk and I was young But that was me before we met It’s been ten years now since you’ve left And I still wish I could go back To living life without regrets But that was long before we met
