Before Too Long
I close my eyes yet it still shines bright, I turn around but it stays in sight. Before too long it calls again, To drag my mind over dale and fen, Where, in that nowhere place, perpetual pain Batters and pounds like torrential rain. My attention drifts and it siezes my heart, The sudden release is vicious - I smart. Before too long impending doom Descends like dusk within the room, Where, in that lonely place, perpetual cold Engulfs and drowns my withering soul. A whisp of an image might cross my path, To lift my spirits and stoke the hearth. Before too long I see the day, That hand in hand we tread the hay, Where, in that beautiful place, perpetual bliss Is sealed with a soft and tender kiss. The fall of the curtain averts my eyes, As reality strikes and away she flies. Before too long I think ahead To a time when back she may be led, To where, in that hopeful heart, perpetual glee, Will blossom, flourish and eternal be. The pavement, black, attacks my feet - Subdued in pace they tread their beat. Before too long I picture her, But time has passed and memories blur. There's nowhere left for me to go; My heart is filled with perpetual snow. I haven't been on here for three years, it seems. Perhaps my last poem put me off trying to write any more. But here is something I apparently wrote on 11th October 1993, rediscovered in my old email archives. I'm not quite convinced the rhythm is good enough. Any suggestions for a better closing line?
