By the Wayside or the 21st Century Kid
There’s such a grand scale to the minor miracles that occur When the gathering of bigoted zealots and the condemning sycophants The coming of the strategic misogynists and the imploding homophobes Standing side by side rejoicing the birth of the 21 First Century Kid At night we kiss like foes and make love so savagely Bellies bow and bend, arching in the shapes of tanks of trucks Each hand placed to strategically block out the next We fall by the wayside, the roadside, eventually by the wrong side We’re the Queens of Boulevards, the Kings of Suburbia We, who conquered hills and climbed mountains We, who fought lions and slain dragons We, the relentless Warriors and the conjured Soldiers At each side of the bed we’re moving mountains with faith We’re building the walls between us Blocking out each real sentiment that encourages us to believe In a greater power, in words that bind and hands that unite There’s a grand scale to the hope that has yet to be prevailed When we realize that the Kid born to salvage and redeem us The stranger on the street we pass with repudiation We fall by the wayside, the roadside, eventually by the wrong side
