city of birds
The city of birds Imprinting the skies With their wingspan Gliding amongst the spaces Between trees, buildings And electrical wires Staying low Some birds Stop While others rise with the wind Sometimes my heart feels As free When I glance up from my car window on a Trafficked street When the sun rises to the sounds of Their awakening And I come home to their Activity, as the sun slips Behind the horizon. I’ve lived and seen so many cities – yet this is the only place I’ve met such birds of urban existence – comfortable and at home with their obstacled path of pollution, noise and a desert like climate. These birds of Karachi never cease to astonish and amaze me. Never a moment where our skies aren’t graced by their wings in flight. In silence I can feel their hearts beating with mine Our wings intertwined at the root We are not separate But one whole universe as one organism The truth so clearly etched In this connection of my city and its birds.
