Darkness before Dawn
The stars above glitter with unhindered brilliance, The moon glows bright, like a flare. The beauty of night is astounding, however It would not last forever. Soldiers stay encamped, flames crackling with the wind The bitter cold is gripping them, and their breath clouds like the fog, Moans can be heard, by those who are wounded, And the wolves howl along, hearing their tale, Feeling their pain. It is darkest before dawn they say, truly that is a fact Wherever no light shines, daemons roam in packs, The silence is deafening, like an encased room It’s as though we were being hunted. The foul stenches of battle fill my lungs The smell of decaying flesh is strong in the air And so is the taste of blood, Salty Sweat is no issue under this darkened sun. The light begins to come, not one soldier takes notice, They must be enjoying this time, when no strife takes place, I am the only one that notices, yet I wish that it had never come I call the soldiers in my hoarse tone to battle, under this rising sun. The darkness vanishes, the silence dissipates The enemy ahead, we wished for the light to go They begin their volley, the arrows whistling in the air. Truly it is a fact; it is darkest before dawn.
