Dog Walk
Five is a familiar number I see on my hands And for the life of me I take it for granted Like deciding to draw My first breath upon birth I could have been brave And said No, I don't need you But upon an urge I inhaled to cry To grow up to get used to Things like gravity And love And to get used to them too Later in life I woke up To screens And upon them were men Hitting each other With clenched fists I understood What strength is What the world is And why they do it And I counted their toes I thought to myself They might as well Have had three toes And be strange aliens But they have five Like me And I thought of Hollywood Women And popularity Where I lived And how it all is The same No matter where you go It becomes a byword From dust ye came And unto dust Ye shall return And that he saw That the light Was good And I looked around To see That I loved my eyes But that I Have become used to them Like my hands And my feet And I wonder Why you brought me here My parents told me That it was love And I do love love And so by it I wonder about orphans Who had also come here Without it To know that my parents Were kind people That I Was lucky And that the notion of luck Is absurd This brought me back To the immortality He placed within my heart As I chase After wind And I started to live Everywhere All at once And as I looked out The window I saw a man walk his dog And I thought to myself Yes That is what a man looks like When he walks his dog Do I feel What it looks like When I do it too? Or do I take it for granted To lose the time Thinking of other things Like this poem? I think to myself What am I supposed to be doing? Shall I have children? Will they be good men or bad? This is a list of things people do Who get used to the world To be normal and take it for granted To watch dust come up in one place And to rise in another To clash against each other To then return to dust together Like the ebb and pull Of the watery ocean Lured to shore by the moon To be flattened out by the earth And I saw once again that one place Is as good as any other That anything that may happen Will happen And that neither does time matter When I walk my dog now I walk my dog appreciating it Nowhere And timeless
