For Lack of a Better Poem

These notes I write on hungry pages, They just don't quite do it sometimes. My rhymes fall short off a horse that's just too fast to keep track of. Because, sometimes what's unwritten says more. So for lack of a better poem, This is what i'll give to you. My words, They float away from the paper. I can't write as fast as it leaves, You can't grab onto something that thinks it's so free. I wrote it down yesterday. But for lack of a better poem, This is what I made for you. And my fingertip's on the fire, But I can't feel the burn. Cause when the sunshine goes blind, I finally see where to turn: Beyond the hills and the valleys, Where the tears start to mend towards end of the road. Beyond the brooks and streams, Where the air starts to spare some weight from the load. There's an old man in a kitchen, Teaching his grandson the family recipe. And there's kids down the street, Ripping up the basketball court. Who knew one day they'd be famous? Bringing a whole new game to an old sport. I wanted to apply this. Foundation of beauty found in the suburbs, Gaining up to the roots, rusting up through the new herbs. But for lack of a better poet, This is what I am for you. But just keep in mind, No matter what you find, And no matter where you are, Be it near, be it far, Remember that you'll always have someone here, Missing you. All I want is to express myself too, But for lack of a better poet, I'm doing the best I can for you.
