From an Unborn Child
Mommy, why did life have to end? Why was I not allowed to live? Why must I never see the world? Was a grave all that you could give? To live my life like you live yours This was all I wanted to do A place in your heart and your life— The only thing I asked of you. But yet you did not want me still So life, it ended as it began Oh, why couldn't you let me live? I ask you this question again. My heart that wanted to love you Was made to silence its beating The day I longed for never came-- The day we’d at last be meeting. I wanted to fill your days with light I just wanted to be your child To bring you joy we babies bring And brighten your life with my smile. I wanted to say “I love you” As soon as I had learned to talk I wanted to be your best friend And hold your hand on countless walks. I wanted to hug your neck so tight With these now lifeless little arms I dreamed of sleeping on your chest Where I'd feel sheltered from all harm. My hands that wanted to help you Mommy, as soon as they knew how Lips that wanted to kiss your cheek-- Forever cold and silent now. I’ll never feel your warm, soft skin The comfort of your beating heart Hear lullabies flow from your lips For of your life I'm not a part. I'll never hear the ocean waves Or see the birds or stars on high For to life, the world, and to you I have been made to say good-bye. But I just ask one thing of you If with child again you should be Please, don't cut short that little life The way that you have done with me. Let them live and grow beside you Enjoy the life I didn’t get And though you never think of me Your voice my heart will ne’er forget. I love you though we've never met And now I just want you to know I’ve forgiven you, Dear Mommy For not letting me live and grow. Deep darkness has enveloped me It’s cold and lonely in this place If I, only for a moment Could catch a glimpse of your dear face!
