Happy Days
Childhood memories that we treasure Thinking of these gives us pleasure Climbing trees, branches to swing from Collecting conkers that weighed a ton! Dresses that mother made with a hair bow just the same shade Hopscotch and skipping and a top for the whipping I remember Janet and John Now what were they on? Those desks with an inkwell and milk we could drink well Walking to school which was a pleasure Spending days that now I would treasure. In the school yard we played together we went outside whatever the weather Teachers that you always obeyed Because you were awfully afraid to break the rule when you were at school Rhubarb sticks to dip in sugar to make them sweet so you didn't shudder Finding eggs hiding under hens that you watched scratching in their pens We were wary of the Banty cock That you knew you would have to knock off the shed roof where it would lie in wait to jump on you cause it wasn't your mate The gaggle of geese that dad reared that my brothers and I all feared when chase you they did we all ran and hid Joey the gander was very frightening When he flapped you ran like lightening Fluffy goslings cute and sweet From huge goose eggs we tended a treat Christmas time we didn't have much just love and kisses and parents loving touch An orange and a shiny penny But a goose for dinner always called Jenny Wandering the woods both near and far Birds nesting, questing, what no car? Playing cowboys and Indians on Marshes Hill We shot more there than the Yanks ever will Up the yard at break of dawn In my nightie quite forlorn To go to the loo with a wooden seat Hoping the milkman you wouldn't meet Mum cooking the tea on an open fire Pots were black and looked quite dire But great the food tasted And nothing got wasted Drawing water from the well What things were in it you couldn’t tell! But we were all healthy Though we certainly weren’t wealthy I’m now in the Autumn of my life And I’ve had my share of trouble and strife Thoughts of my childhood have sustained me Thinking of that lifestyle has gained me my, Happy Days, Happy Days
