I Wanted

I wanted you to dream about me And make me your one and only But now I see that it was all a sham You played with my heart and didn’t give a damn So now I’m alone with thoughts only of you As if somehow magically you would come through And rescue me from the burden that you gave to me The burden that I carry is your insanity I wanted a life full of happiness and pleasure And you showed me glimpses of that much-needed treasure But now I know that they were all mirages at best To fall for you now would mean I had failed the test A test of attrition; a test of self-love and dedication That you were unwilling to give despite your proclamation Of “I love you,” and now I must say I am better off without you, but I love you anyway.
