Independence Regardless
Independence Regardless Independence Regardless To Those With Sightless Eyes Yesterday I walked the park near to my home My trusty cane and I walked over sandy loom, And as I reached the corner my ears listened good As I placed my cane ahead as I was taught I should. I slowly walked across as cars stopped to let me go I always prayed a prayer that each car would do so. Some little children rushed past me as I took the curb, My balancethey quickly diddisturb. Then I felt a gentle hand take my arm so fast “Just trying to steady you dear,” she said as she passed. They are my daily angels, those who touch my arm And keep me from all harm. I am home standing outside my large apartment And getting up there is my department, I’ve long ago memorized my every step up, Even careful for the neighbor’s pup. I know just how many footsteps it takes to my door And really if you know, there is so much more. I seem to hear so much better now and touch is alive And even my sense of smell advanced and has arrived. I can tell when there is smoke, before the alarm goes off And I can hear people approaching without even the slightest cough, And my memory gets better every day I live, For this is the main way I retain so I can give. I praise God for brail, for many books I have to read Even the Holy Bible that has enlightened and freed, I’ve memorized how many steps it is to each room I never again, need to assume. I even play the piano without a note to see The fingers are guided by the brain, the key, For I play by ear and it flows so naturally As my fingers dance and play the melody. Like any other problem, the attitude’s at play Either we learn again to live or we sit all the day. A desire to be independent, is a special need To replace the eyes, one can learn to succeed. By, Marie D. Glass (The Rhymer) November 1, 2006 ©2006 Rhymer I know several people from my Church who are blind. All from the same family. They are indeed, independent regardless. :) Marie
