Lakeland Morning

Lakeland Morning Here we go me n' Pete in Borrowdales early light Derwent water sparkles but looking for a mountain Pike Through the farmyard quietly, of course we shut the gate The path ahead beckons adventure does await. Here we go me n' Pete noisy stream on our right shoulders And it's water in a hurry as it slaps and kicks the boulders Stonewalls on the fells, so precise, so long so high Reminders of countrymen few tools but what an eye. On we go me n' Pete over Stockley bridge I think we go stright on but he's leading me up this ridge Looked all right my way, and this is bloody tough Up we go, up we go, No! not out of puff. O.K. blowing me not Pete, then a welcome plateau Cross the stream again still noisy but more shallow Styhead tarn on our left, and a chap who's camped all night Then the landmark strecher box but I'm alright , yes alright. Flask of tea me n' Pete in the shaddow of the Gable Magnificent noble mountain, top of my league table But not today as refreshed we retied our heavy boots The just ajust our rucksacks, to find the corridor route. I've have wet feet, I say to Pete. Did I hear him laugh? As up we go again over streams that cross the path It's uneven and a scrabble and I fear an ankle crack Only Lingmell and Wastwater confirm still on the map. C'mon said Pete were nearly there scrambling over scree As it slithers underneath my boots and smacks against my knee But yes he's right, there's the summit highest in the land And when I stood on top I was England's highest man. Then down we go me n' Pete retracing early steps Gable, Skiddaw Haystacks what shall we do what next Detour.... Sparkling Tarn, then join up with Grains Gill It's Fish and chips tonight and my son can pay the bill.
