May I now cease from loving thee?
Lament for a Lost Love (A VeryLong Way After John Donne) May I now cease from loving thee; since hating, for thy cruel forsaking, hath o’er-encompassed the fond love which offtime dwelt inside of me. I trou, thy will was fixed to stay; yet, bent before Death’s dark bidding. Incapable of making thy haughty refusal to obey. Pressing soft and close upon thee. Placing cold lips upon thy brow, Death entered thee, and thee possessed ; yea, at the last usurping me. Virgin, you lived - now sleep you well. No hymen e’re for thee was broke. Dwell thou in Heaven if thou will. My voided heart dwells deep in Hell. The ivy which entwines thy tomb Enfolds thee now, more close than thy discarded swain had leave to do. Love- for some lesser love make room.. I beg thee- Go! And quit me now.
