Migrating north

When I was a child, I would not worry and I would not fear My life was so carefree although times were harsh and severe. Playing with my siblings in the farms of Sabin, Minnesota After a long hard day working in the fields meeting our quota. We would wake at 4 a.m. to prepare ourselves for hoeing beets Get the water containers ready for the long hard summer heat My father would round us up at exactly 5 in the morning We knew what would happen if we didn't heed his warning. We would work from sun-up to sun-down almost every day Prayed for a little rain so that we could stay home and play If we were lucky we would work at least 10 to 12 hours Get home at 9 p.m. then line up to get to the shower. There was one shower stall for at least 30 workers And it took us at least 3 hours, due to pecking orders The elders would go first and we had to wait our turn So we were lucky if by midnight we would all adjourn. The only break we had during the week was on a Sunday We would go to church and enjoy the free time that day We were young, dumb, fancy-free, didn't know any better Migrating North, our vacation from the Texas scorching weather.
