My White Poplar Massacre

Because of the reverence you brought about in me I would never assume to write about you, my Poplar But an old lover's sister whose heart is just as torn By what they did to you as we had to simply watch Asked for me to try and pay to you some form of homage Even though my best efforts will forever fail you You were here before I ever made my athwart arrival And that you were to even those who were born here You soothed all of us as we went through our motions Between the highs and the lows you were always there But now I am bitter with gladness for ever taking the time To bask in the light of the wind that shimmered in your leaves Your mighty roots denied the fakeness of tarmac pavements As you up-earthed the very foundations of the artificial path To say 'no' to the confines of 'the man' that tried to cage you And I will never forget the way she enjoyed how you did this For our love for nature was one of the best things we shared As we casually strolled past you forgetting what time was worth Where you used to stand there is nothing now but silence replaced With the man that came back to take his revenge upon your freedom My eyes well up when I come to understand that even as a citizen I would have been just as helpless as the rest of you in order to help All of us had to simply watch as they cut a part of us out of the earth -Your final breath reminds us that humanity itself deserves this berth
