If I were a bird I’d circle the skies And let each sunset mold my eyes. Open space would be my home, Far beyond the grasp of Rome. If I were a rabbit I would leap Past the houses where dead sleep. Through fields of clover I would wonder With only my thoughts left to ponder. If I were a tree I’d stand still Each gust of wind would be thrill. All my longings I’d cast away And grab the sun with every day. But I’m a man and will remain Within the bounds of love and pain Until the day the skies decree That from this body I am free.
