On the run
Credits This poem was inspired by the community thread (Education section, posted by MontrealPoet). The model is an old form of Greek poetry which I had never heard of before. I posted the poem there but thought I would add it here too as a thank you to the more experienced people who have taken time to add resources, and an encouragement to other newcomers to have a go. On the run First step, strength of will (or no steps at all: cold out there, cosy in here). Rising in darkness smudged by daylight. Ageing muscles need time to warm: reluctant, protesting, coaxed into life. Starting slow, rhythm building, legs are driving, arms are pumping, heart is drumming, adrenaline bursts! Joy of life at pace. Mini dawn chorus (two sparrows, one gull). Sun’s early ray weaves diamonds through tree leaves. Sweaty droplets track down face and back. Pine needle floor flexes under foot, brassy breeze seduces neckline Final lap: Hint of blister, chafing thigh, rasping breath, body spent, job well done. Later at home, iced orange juice, hot shower needles work hard to remove traces of hard work: sweat, salt, stray leaf. Body at leisure inside and out (until next time.)
