A Quatern is a sixteen line French form composed of four quatrains. It is similar to the Kyrielle and the Retourne. It has a refrain that is in a different place in each quatrain. The first line of stanza one is the second line of stanza two, third line of stanza three, and fouth line of stanza four. A quatern has eight syllables per line. It does not have to be iambic or follow a set rhyme scheme. Will of the free or destined fate? Where lay the keys to truth innate? What is the nature of our past? Has future’s trial been set and cast? Does servitude to life restate Will of the free or destined fate? Are we then cursed or free to roam? Perhaps stone fate enticed this poem. Should anguish shadow our events? Repents in vain to life’s laments? Will of the free or destined fate Which shall we “choose” to bear our weight? But can there be a middle ground? A path which one may call profound. Sweet chaos might justmediate, Will of the free and destined fate.
