Pause to Live; Don't Pause Living

So many hustling and bustling Hurrying and rushing, but to where? Yearning for the destination About the ride they do not care. The journey’s end is different things For some success, for others fame A dream house and big promotion Or being ahead in the game. Many think that they’ll be happy When these goals they at last achieve They wait to enjoy life later But what sad plan they have conceived. For they forget time doesn’t wait And life cannot be put on hold Whether moments are lived or lost Time’s ticking hands can’t be controlled. Some slip away with goals unreached And never stopped to live, it seems Countless moments left unsavored People outlived by all their dreams. Others reach their destinations And then at last they realize That life quietly passed them by As they chased an elusive prize. They make it to the mountaintop “What a beautiful view!” They say, But soon they find so many things They wished they’d done along the way. Like picnics in the flowered fields On all those beautiful springs days Just listening to all the birds That cheered the breeze that made trees sway. And they look down to meadows, fields To all the beauty spread below Each place could have been a moment A memory to make joy grow. There are even sadder stories Some make it to the top alone The longed for moment—it arrives But how the past they now bemoan. They never paused or just slowed down Now at the summit they shed tears They wished that they’d enjoyed the climb With ones they lost yet held so dear. Destinations are important But it’s about the journey, too Not just about where you’re going But about who’s going with you. So slow down, don’t hurry so much Seize each moment that comes your way No matter where you are in life Make time to be happy today. Take time to live and laugh and love Don’t wait until you’ve saved “enough” For although we may stop and pause Life doesn’t pause along with us. It’s not wrong to pursue great things But don’t forget to love the ride No matter the milepost you’re at Enjoy the company at your side. Happiness isn’t a destination No, it isn’t a goal or place It’s a way of trav’ling through life With grateful smiles upon our face While led by silent hand of grace.
