Poetry Duel
Description: I had been looking for an extra set of body armor (aka "bullet-proof vest." Long story-- has to do with my line of work. I imagine you British types must be horrified already, so I won't mention my guns. lol). My dad found a used vest on ebay he thought I might want, and called me. Turns out it was a Second Chance brand vest that a seller named "Pastor Pat" in Pennsylvania was selling. My dad thought "Pastor Pat's Second Chance Vest" was something that sounded like the title of a mysterious, perhaps magical, object. So he issued a challenge-- a duel. The weapon: poetry. He had a poem fired off to me before I had even started. Here it is (dad's): *** Pastor Pat's Second Chance Vest In Penn's woods, a haven, an eagle's nest, Apart, a peace, a place of rest With secrets therein, a gold oaken chest, An item or two-- and a second chance vest. A sermon, a smile, a spirit bequest, May be all a soul needs when put to the test, But there was a time when Pat found it best To be about town in his second chance vest. Pastor and preacher, your servant, your guest, Had gambled before (once tempted, twice blest) A bullet unbidden struck his left upper breast, An item or two-- and his second chance vest. -WCS Jr. *** So of course he'd already gotten his words and imagery stuck in my head. How could I possibly even produce my own poem now? And what chance could it stand? I had one way out: turn knowledge of his poem to an advantage. Parody! My poem: *** Pawn Shop Pete's Secondhand Vest In Pete's Goods, head shaven, an eagle's nest, A purse, a pearl, a printing press, With bargains therein, an old croaking chest, An item or two-- and a secondhand vest. A shoeshine, a suit, a civil request May be all a man needs to be finely dressed, But there was a time when Pete found it best To be about town in his secondhand vest. Partially patchy, an ink stain, a crest, Been laundered before (once folded, twice pressed); A burglar unbidden has ended his quest With an item or two-- and a secondhand vest. -WCS III (5Card Charlie)

My poetry has been included in some online publications, including Planetmag, as well as some published compilations and audio CDs. I finally got a paid contract with a publisher, only to have it fall through. Frustrating. Bit of advice: if you...
