Out on the beach
the dunes seem eternal,
land follows the lead
of the waves.

But the water is stronger
and will be there
when dark clouds beckon
and the wind starts to rise.

After the storm
the waves turn to gentle,
they’ll rock you off
for a sleep.

But the dunes
have ceded to the water,
been picked up
and now they are gone.

So when we feel
at the heights of our power
it would be wise
to remember the sand.

When confronting the sea
don’t expect to win,
just keep shifting
and in quiet return.
