Survive

To all those desperate people Who feel the world standing on their shoulders Who can’t lift their feet from the weight of it all Especially the young, I know how you feel And I offer you this: I have stood with the knife to my throat; With my foot stuck to the floor As the world melted away with the speed; As the stout bulk of a tree born before my grandparents Stood ready to split my car in two; I had the thought that saved my life. If I die, they win! Everyone who laughed at me Everyone who hurt me Everyone who said I would amount to nothing They will win if I die! It is not much But in the hour of need It is a handle to hold It can keep you from going under Until you can get your feet under you And find a new light to hang At the end of your tunnel And I will leave you with one thing more. The world needs you! It needs people who can walk away, Clime a nearby hill And look at things from a new perspective. The world needs imagination. It needs people who can create It needs new ideas and new experiences For these can improve the quality of life This last thought I say to the young. I know how the gift of youth Can distort our perspective That gift which gives us greater inspiration Also gives us greater feelings The world needs you most! Those like me have had our chance I pressed inward with all my might Trying to ignite the spark that will make me shine Only to end up a failed star A brown dwarf among giants yet to shine But your time is not yet here You will shine, and shine magnificently When the immensity of those gifted feelings Threatens to suffocate you, Please remember these thoughts The world needs you I need you To survive And make things better.
