I eaves-dropped on the birds today Though I comprehend not a word they say Perhaps they chatted behind my back About the manners that I lack Who knows, their gossiping tweets might tell Of dirtier skies they once knew well Which now are shiny bright as new And now extend a clearer view Their chirruping filled the air with song I noticed, too, as I walked along That I was not the only one Who raised my face to the midday sun We smiled in wonder, was it always so? Or is this marvellous musical show The birds’ way of sending a letter upstairs To someone they’d thought no longer cares “Thanks St Francis for your sneaky way To show these humans a better way” If I could speak their language I would Assure them their message is understood.
