that same old melody

Holding on to something I didn't have before Walking within inches of the electric chair, But my soul floats above it I've already been there Singing to a song played on an out of tune guitar While the man with the piano accordion Glares at the monkey with a drum in his arms They both want the same thing Live the same lie You kiss me for the second- first time in the back of your car I feel like a bush fire inside my eyes and my stomach pulled apart Promises of change and little high notes in your voice Tell me not to trust you This false shop window dummy Not the coin operated boy I loved before Walking down this street I’ve known for 15 years Houses grow like trees around me Only to be torn down again Built bigger and newer You’re trying to build me higher I’m just trying to reach out to you But my hands keep getting caught in my bow strings And not a single note sounds good I used to play like Bright Eyes The Devil and Vivaldi On my polished piece of wood But you've stolen my words, my melody, And I think you’re never going to find it Just let me sing my little off notes and try Birds flitter in my head Drop to the ground As you hammer around in there in your mother's car Pressurized from all sides; Like floating with your ears just under water This thing that’s a little like love is drowning me I don't know if I like swimming when its snowing outside
