The Enigma

Enigma The rage has come again. It boils up in my blood. Synapses jerk and flash, the mind smokes, For I see Indignity at his work, scornful, jeering at his victims. I know he is beyond the sword of my reason, Beyond even the sacrificial dignity of a plea for mercy. He knows that he is the alpha of life and omega of death And that his excommunication is barred from the field of play. He fears nothing for he has nothing to fear. “What game of life is this where only one can win?” I ask “The odds must be even or there is no competition.” He smiles and replies, “I did not invent the game. You set yourself up for me to have my sport.” “Your offence in Eden sentenced you to play with me.” “Retrace your steps if my presence causes pain And return to your Garden whence I may not enter, That is if your God will permit your return.” But I am loath to leave the field of conflict, If I cannot win at least I may fight. Is the sop of injustice proven - as good as victory? As I strike with self righteous rage he parries easily. He smiles as I thrust. My blow glancing off the impenetrable. “The cost of life is indignity,” he mocks, “There is one solution, Shall I strike and free you?” I block the symbolic blow as he knows I will. “What would your kind do with unhindered freedom of choice,” he asks “Would you like more women to abuse, Would your women wish to kill more of the unborn, Do you desire tastier wine, more of your own kind to kill, More drugs to fend off the monotony of your reality In the unchanging agenda of your lives.” “It would seem you have what you seek, But lack more time to practice the follies that fuel my presence, Is it time that you seek by overcoming me?" “Or is it only the satisfaction of boundless appetites?” I pant with frustration but he is cool and quick. “Take away pain and death,” I shout He replies; “If you knew no hunger would you take pleasure in food?” “You do not appreciate health until pain or disability removes it Yet you inflict pain on others and are careless of their suffering.” “You know of love but you more ardently embrace hate.” “If you would vanquish and banish me, you must first Destroy the me within you.” He chuckles, “But would you still be you if I die?”
