The Knight of Chartres In the fabled city of Chartres (so merry) A crossroads in the life of a knight (Mon Cheri) A gallant one to brave a crusade But to the French king he was not but a spade His court is filled with nobility The war is not their responsibility The knight sought not riches nor gold But to seek a lovely maiden and suit not cold In the land of Jerusalem a fair princess He knew her not until wars duress So he deined to win her heart Across the river Jordan through saracen blade His sword slathered with blood; forbade With a soul was damaged with burdens strife A love for fair esther contributed life Her love for him went untold When he tried in earnest to siege her heart For in the morrow they must part Upon the field of battle the force did fight Many men died many maids cried In the sands the would swell and pool The great plan of the Christians the enemy lord be fooled His mighty castle fell its lord beheaded And so it came to pass The knight lay in grass Now within the green pastures of his father Who art in heaven
