Long before the dawn of light When nothing was but all was night They gathered from far beyond life’s place To breathe life into a sacred space. Towers that rose to their power Ornate vines to hold their bowers Fire like stars to light their faces Carved in stone that lasted ages. Their thirst for glory had no bounds As blood was spilled with dying sounds Slain in honor for beings unseen The life of the purest virgins clean. Torrents of blood swept away the dead While kings got raised, by mortals led To praise his life and life-long fame The gods now only but a name. For men so puffed their hearts and chests The gods now angered thought it best To slay them all and start again And create a class of humble men. They would be given no limits of days So long they gave the proper praise.
