The Prodigal Son

Weary he comes from traveling afar Slow are his steps as they make their way Above his only companions the stars Watching the hills that in silence lay. The night is dark, the moon hides her face Regret's in his heart as he trudges home He must return to that happy place Where he'll no more feel lost and alone. The hours pass, he continues on The breeze and crickets the silence break Soon the sky will be dressed in dawn How hard it is now a step to take. With dust on his shoes and miles behind The last of his strength beginning to wane But firm and determined in his mind He takes the last turn toward the rugged lane. Encouraged on by the bullfrogs' call He can in the distance finally see A yellow light ahead, faint and small He whispers out loud: "What could it be?" With painful steps he slowly draws near To the welcome light as brighter it grows Down his cheek falls a quiet tear For the source of the light he now knows. It comes from the house by giant oaks Yonder over the rise in the road On his emotions he softly chokes For it is his home! His loving abode. His parents each night since that sad time As rebellious lad he left on his quest Had left the porch light on as a sign They believed one day he'd return to the nest. How many years it's been since then But the wandering man comes home tonight The prodigal son comes home again His heart to soothe, a wrong to right. And as he nears the groaning, old gate As night begins to loosen its grip "Why, oh why did I ever wait!" He moans to himself through dry parched lips. With no strength left and a face so thin He softly knocks on the wooden door What tattered clothes and what dirty skin But they'll love him like e'er before No longer a lad, the tears they fall But yet he knows they'll forgive all And with much joy they'll welcome him For this their son, this vagabond For oh so long was lost and gone!
