The Snowy Walk Home
It's not winter in the U.S., but I'm putting together a small collection on the 4 seasons and realized I didn't have much about snow. So this is new--a work-in-progress, and I welcome help. I don't think I want the meter to be perfectly consistent, but if anyone has ideas for improvement, I'm all ears! The Snowy Walk Home Choir practice near Christmas was always at night, and I would walk there because of my appetite for the twilight, the starlight, and moonlight. And it wasn’t so far from my home, and I needed some time all alone. One night it was cloudy, near freezing, and while we were all inside singing, outside snow was quietly falling. The snow wasn’t drifted or blown, it just filled up the town like white foam. When we finished I walked down the street, snow swirling and burying my feet while all those around were asleep. It was night; I was on my way home. It was snowing, and I was alone. When I got to the woods I could see that they weren’t dark, as I thought they would be; all the snow on the trees just looked heavenly. Then I had an idea that few would condone— I decided to take the longer way home. Snow covered the rocks, streams, and ground and made all the trees white and round. It muffled the air—there was no sound. The snow changed the woods near my home into a magical world of its own. Though nothing looked familiar, I felt no fear; the path to my house was perfectly clear— but if I got lost and yelled, no one would hear. I was still not far from my home, but that night I was truly alone. Of course my walk was a perfect delight; The snowflakes whirled in circles of flight; I reveled in joy at each lovely sight. And I wouldn’t have dared if I hadn’t known that the snow at night has a light of its own.
