The Song of Blame
For all human emotion There is one that is the worst, For it fills us with commotion With its dark unquenching thirst. It’s neither hatred, love or lust Nor mortifying shame, But the feeling which I most disgust Is the feeling known as “blame.” It always rears its ugly head When loved ones feel distraught By controlling hurtful things we’ve said Without our normal thought. We ring out our frustration In our sisters and our brothers As we find our consolation By inflicting pain in others. So why must someone be at fault Whenever there is pain, Why must solutions we exalt Be those we know insane. The human mind’s a simple thing The brain our God has built, But the song of blame we’d rather sing Than acknowledge our own guilt.
