The Train

I heard its metal footsteps Thudding faster, lulling louder Then it emerged from the barren horizon stridently braying and spewing smoke. It stood looming above, dwarfing me into obscurity, This man-made beast of sable steel and brawn, of perfection and precision, opaque and trapping the sun’s glistening beams. Opening its doors, the locomotive beckoned me in. I felt its power rumble beneath my feet, the systolic pulsing of its eternal heart. gazing out the window watching the cities of blind comfort fade to distant vanishing points. Flashing though the world like black lightning, Immune to pelting rains, to arctic winds to human pleas and even when god himself ordered us to stop He was left choking in a silhouette of black fumes. The train is logic, on the tracks of reason, What wondrous worlds and realms we may explore But the destinations aren’t mine to choose.
