The Unlatched Door

Ilamae inspired this one...she wrote a very nice piece that haunted me, so I wrote this to see if I could capture a haunting of my own Inside the dark this windy night Corn in fields sway in their rows Having survived the hungry crows Silent Timmy softly sleeps Mother pious says her prayers Daddy drunk didn't lock downstairs Far from town this farmhouse stands Yet comes the slasher through the roar To turn the knob, walk through the door Creaking stairs could give away The moving shadow, softly creeps While drunk and kindred softly sleep Timmy is deep in slumberland Daddy snoring away the night Mommy frozen stiff with fright She sees the shadow at her door But utters just a silent scream Daddy in drunken slumber dreams Then comes forth the rush of blood Staining the silver of that blade And the quilt her hands had made The blade again yet strikes a neck Daddy for not closing a door Has sobered and shall drink no more Across the floor in peaceful dreams Little Timmy forever sleeps And away the killing creeper creeps
