The winter of discontent No rubbish was removed From the morgue Into the grave no body was sent The whole country was on strike No buses where running To go anywhere you had to get on and ride your bike Electric power cuts where random Only candles for our light from 1978 to 1979 Demands for larger pay on strike the public sector would stay The trade union congress against control inflation No one rich or poor escaped it effected the whole nation Football pitches turned into rubbish tips Like a rat infested ships It was the coldest winter for 16 years Blizzards and deep snow We had to wear double sets of cloths And balaclavas to warm our ears For those who went through it and remember In 1979 conservative won the election Margaret Thatcher became prime minister Then in for her wrath Against anyone in her path She started to destroy every socialist Now her legacy is to keep the north south divide To keep the rich getting richer And in the north keep them poorer I was fourteen years old And forty years later This is what I remember
