The Wolves
<!--{1235550931006 My heart beating, Blood pulsing in my head, The tick tick tick of the central heating, Together made this pattern, and it said; Here comes the wolf Here comes the wolf Everybody knows that Here comes the wolf And so, by the gloomy Light of the hallway, Ironically, I called you For help And soon you stood, A looming silhouette in the doorway, Looking down at me. ‘It’s alright’ you said You checked inside my wardrobes, Checked under my bed, And it didn’t seem to worry My pretty little head; That when the wardrobe doors had closed, You seemed to be crawling On all fours, with a snout, And an inquisitive, intrusive Nose. You padded around my room, And you were calling In a strange language, Not all of which I understood. I was only six. I patted and stroked your head, Tossed and turned in my bed, And the sound of your four paws, Pacing round and round and round On my bedroom floor, sounded like; Here comes the wolf Here comes the wolf Everybody knows that Here comes the wolf Finally I tossed and turned no more, The writhing ceased. Sleep came creeping over me, Not accompanied by peace. And it seemed a moment later, They were there. Wolves in white doctor’s coats, Clicking clipboards, And one with a monocle, Especially to stare. They had glistening equipment, To probe into nose and ears, Strangling stethoscopes, And various ideas. I had been paralysed for the operation, My stomach was slit. They poked and looked and played, Adding and taking away, Trying to make it all fit. Trying to make me seem more sensible, They wanted me neat and clean, And the clicking of their clipboards, And the whirring of those machines I was wired to, made me repeat to myself; Here comes the wolf Here comes the wolf Everybody knows that Here comes the wolf Im not sure how long it took, Probably a few years, Though it seemed like one dream. Many years later I would feel the pain, Would hear the screams, Would see how distorted I had become, Although Im told that I seem Like a nice girl, But I don’t think I was one Before the operation. Before the concentration Of those wolves. I don’t see or feel as much strange stuff now. I can understand language, Understand their weird calls, And I run to them smiling. Never do I hear the sinister sounds, Whispering around dark bedroom walls; Here comes the wolf Here comes the wolf Everybody knows that Here comes the wolf
