The Words That I Write

When you turn off the lights and say your goodnights I’ll keep you safe forever in the words that I write Though your tiara’s fallen crooked over your eyes And your perfect lips have started telling lies I’ll save something different in the words that I write It’s the innocent you I’ll immortalize When you can’t even be saved by soft candlelight I’ll just turn and remember these words that I write And the carnival mirror your glory reflects Turns all your blemishes into tiny specks And since deceit is all the rage I’ll keep the real you on this page I’ll keep you locked inside paper and ink No matter how you change and how you think I’ll always remember in fondest recall The wonder of your light before your fall I’ll write you a story, I’ll write you a song It’d be what you want, but the words all wrong That’s why I’m writing, writing to tell The you I used to know so well Sometimes when you laugh I can still hear your voice Who you used to be, long before you made the choice But you’re still so convinced your decisions are right So I’ll take you and keep you in the words that I write Well the pavement, it came rushing towards you The eyes were so blind, or at least they ignored you With your eyelids all closed and your mouth slipping open I read in the harsh silence the words you could’ve spoken They rang with intoxication as I held you in my arms These arms that I promised would keep you from any harm And since I failed you that ill-fated night I’ll keep you safe forever in these words that I write
