Through Hell And Back

I wrote this poem for my English class last schoolyear. Raging, raging, all through the night, The blazes surrounding like a pack of hungry wolves, It tears through the sky, Ripping a hole right through, But all that pours from it, Its blackness, sinister and dark. I turn to my men, and look them in the eyes, Seeing the faces of young boys, Trying to look strong for their fathers. We stay where we are, Cowering in the dark, But we cannot stay for long. We have to move, and fight our way through, Just like we were trained to do, But do the men who trained us know what it’s like, To go through the world of Hades and back? A deafening noise, a shower of dirt, It pours down like a cool rain would, If there was any left. I signal my men, it’s time to move on, But one by one, all my men are gone.
